The Climate and Security Action Nework (CASAN) builds upon the project on Climate and Security Action through Civil-Military Cooperation in Climate-Related Emergencies (Project CASA) which was launched in 2023 and involved the publication of the report: "Resilience, Readiness, and Response" in July 2025.

The Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change (GMACCC) – founded in 2009 - serves as an authoritative voice on the need for, and the nature of, action to be taken by the security community to reduce the risks posed to national security by a changing climate. The Council consists of 40 serving and retired military personnel and other security experts and 9 partners organisations from 20 countries working together to highlight the security implications of a changing climate;
The Brussels Dialogue on Climate Diplmacy (BDCD) initiated in 2016 - is an informal network for the exchange of information and the promotion of cooperation among European institutions, international organisations, NGOs and think-tanks active in the nexus between climate change and international, national, human and environmental security; and
Tthe North-Atlantic Civil-Society Working-Group on Environment and Security (NCWES) a network of 50 representatives of 25 organisations and 20 independent experts from academia, NGOs, think tanks and action groups produced the report “Sustainable Peace & Security in a Changing Climate: Recommendations for NATO 2030” providing policy options and practical recommendations to help strengthen NATO in a time of new environmental-related challenges in the interest of promoting sustainable peace and security for all.
The primary role of the Climate and Security Action Network (CASAN) is to facilitate the:
- coordinating and carrying out participatory research,
- exchanging of information and sharing of knowledge
- promotion of cooperation and coordination
… among the partners, members and participants in Project CASA, the BDCD and NCWES.
